Authorities expected water to begin draining Thursday from a lake created by last month's devastating earthquake in southwestern China. But continuing aftershocks remain a concern: they could destabilize the rock and soil that form a quake-created dam holding back more than 200 million cubic meters (50 billion gallons) of water. Four earthquakes measuring between magnitude 4.5 and 5.3 rattled the region during a 24-hour period, ending Thursday afternoon. Engineers were anxiously watching as water rising behind the dam neared a spillway designed to relieve the pressure on it. As of Wednesday afternoon, water in the so-called Tangjiashan quake lake had risen to within 1.4 meters (4.5 feet)

Villagers on some remote islands of Papua New Guinea fear that aftershocks from three recent earthquakes may generate more tidal waves capable of swamping coastal communities. Two large earthquakes hit the remote South Pacific region last Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The first measured about magnitude 8.0; the second, about three hours later, measured magnitude 7.7. A third quake hit the region on Saturday. It measured about magnitude 7.0. The quakes caused a tidal deluge that swamped seven villages on the island of New Ireland, according to Papua New Guinea's national newspaper, the Post-Courier.

Central Oklahoma continued to experience dozens of aftershocks Sunday, nearly 24 hours since the state's strongest earthquake since 1952 was felt throughout the region. More than ten aftershocks measuring at east 3.0 magnitude were reported Sunday, in the hours after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake took residents by surprise Saturday night. The temblor rattled homes and structures, causing belongings to scatter in houses and sending strident, booming sounds through the area. Kathy Crawson, a nurse with a community hospital in Prague, Oklahoma, about six miles from the quake's epicenter, said Sunday the experience was terrifying, but she was getting used to the aftershocks.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan invoked his country's recovery from World War II on Tuesday as he sought to turn the nation's attention to the arduous task of rebuilding. Yet the challenges awaiting Japan remained on full display the day he spoke: The country rated the crisis at a nuclear plant stricken after last month's earthquake and tsunami as the most severe on an international system for rating nuclear accidents. And a fresh round of earthquakes rumbled across an already battered landscape.

The return of electricity spread slowly Saturday across northern Japan, where hundreds were injured and tens of thousands remained without power after one of the strongest aftershocks following last month's devastating earthquake struck the region. Nearly 250,000 were still waiting for their lights to come on as crews rushed to repair damaged water and gas lines. At least 283 people were injured by Thursday's 7.1-magnitude aftershock alone. It was blamed for two deaths; intial reports indicated a few more deaths, though the causes of those could not be directly tied to the aftershock.

Authorities on Friday blamed three deaths and more than 140 injuries on a fresh earthquake that struck northern Japan a day earlier, shaking up a region already devastated by March's historic temblor. The dead included an 85-year-old man who collapsed and died while trying to get to a shelter with his family and a 79-year-old man who was reported dead on arrival at the Red Cross hospital in the coastal city of Ishinomaki, doctors there reported. Further inland, in Yamagata Prefecture, a 63-year-old woman died after a power outage caused by the quake stopped her oxygen, the prefecture's government told CNN. Another 132 people were injured, 17 of them seriously, according to Japan's National Police Agency.

The warning and advisories were lifted about 90 minutes later, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, but it left millions of Japanese rattled. The quake was closer to the Japanese coast than last month's 9.0-magnitude quake. There were reports of two casualties in the earthquake zone, and 132 people were injured, officials said.

Japanese authorities on Monday called off a tsunami advisory after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake off the country's northeast coast produced little more than ripples. However, the Japan Meteorological Agency urged coastal residents to remain prepared to evacuate because of a continued threat of aftershocks that could spawn tsunamis. Authorities issued a tsunami advisory Monday morning for coastal areas of Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan after a quake struck the region at 7:24 a.m. The tsunami advisory was cancelled at 9:05 a.m. The tsunami height had been expected to climb to half a meter, or 1.6 feet, tall.

Long lines at grocery stores and gas stations along with continued aftershocks and power outages greeted many in Japan on Sunday morning, nearly two days after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that left hundreds dead and missing. Supplies of food and gas were running out in Sendai, the northern coastal city close to the epicenter of Friday's quake. Those who survived the earthquake and chose to remain in the city were enduring two-hour waits at the supermarket, according to a CNN iReporter in Sendai with the username joeyjenkins.
