Far too many passengers are being stranded on board commercial flights in the United States in delays, an air passengers' rights group said Wednesday. FlyersRights.org, in issuing what it calls an air travel consumer report card, said there were more than 1,200 tarmac strandings -- in which passengers are locked in planes on the runways -- in 2008. Delta Air Lines had the greatest number of tarmac delays longer than three hours. Southwest Airlines was rated the best for handling delays by letting customers get off delayed planes, as well as providing food, water and other items.

The new Delta rates start Tuesday and apply to tickets purchased on or after January 5. Passengers who bought tickets before that date will pay the old rates, Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliott said.

The pilots of the commercial jetliner that last week overshot its destination by about 150 miles have said they were using their laptops and lost track of time and location, federal safety officials said Monday. The Airbus A320 was flying at 37,000 feet over the Denver, Colorado, area at 5:56 p.m. Wednesday when it last made radio contact, the safety board said. Northwest Flight 188 had departed San Diego en route to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport carrying 144 passengers, two pilots and three flight attendants.

Volcanic ash from Iceland snarled air traffic across Europe for a second straight day Friday, causing the cancellation of thousands of flights, according to the intergovernmental body that manages European air travel. The plumes have closed some of Europe's busiest airports, including Charles de Gaulle in Paris, London's Heathrow and Schiphol in Amsterdam. Airspace over much of the United Kingdom was closed to all flights except emergencies at least until 7 p.m. (2 p.m. ET)

If an airline loses or delays your bag, can you trust it to let you know how much money you're entitled to? One passenger says don't count on it. She's suing Delta Air Lines for breach of contract, alleging that the carrier leaves fliers in the dark about the compensation they're entitled to when their bags vanish. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to pay up to $3,300 per passenger if bags are "lost, damaged, delayed or pilfered" on a domestic flight.

A Delta Air Lines flight headed from Boston to New York City on Saturday morning returned to Boston's Logan International Airport after a pilot noticed a smoky odor in the cockpit, according to a Delta spokesman. The odor had dissipated by the time the airplane, carrying 34 people, landed in Boston, Carlos Santos said. The pilot of Delta Flight 1379 decided to turn back eight minutes into the flight out of an "abundance of safety," Santos added. All of the plane's passengers were re-booked on a later New York-bound flight.

The pilot of a high-performance biplane died Saturday afternoon when his aircraft crashed at an air show in Kansas City, Missouri, officials said. The plane was doing maneuvers around 1:45 p.m. CT (2:45 p.m. ET) when it crashed into grass near a runway at the Charles B. "I was watching the plane when it did the roll and it was coming down and still spinning," eyewitness Ryan Bader told CNN affiliate KSHB.

Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight experienced an unexpected bump Sunday when the plane rolled off the runway after landing in Detroit. Flight 753 from Las Vegas was trying to turn onto a taxiway when it slipped off the pavement, according to the Wayne County Airport Authority. It's not clear yet what caused the plane to slide off course, spokesman Scott Wintner said. "It was like a toboggan ride down the runway, and we just couldn't make the turn at the end, and we slid off the runway into the grass," passenger Steve Maranowski told CNN affiliate WDIV.

When you're traveling and something goes wrong, all you want is for someone to help you get back on track. That used to mean lengthy lines in the airport or long hold times on the phone, but that's been changing, thanks to social media. Airlines are quickly learning that social media tools, particularly Twitter, can act as an excellent customer service channel. Though Twitter and Facebook have been around for several years, many airlines, like other companies, were hesitant to really embrace them.

Stung by online comments calling it "disgusting" and "un-American," Delta Air Lines on Wednesday announced it will allow U.S. military personnel traveling on orders to check more bags for free. The policy change, which is effective immediately, came a day after U.S. Army soldiers returning from Afghanistan complained that they were charged almost $3,000 in bag fees by the carrier. "We regret that this experience caused these soldiers to feel anything but welcome on their return home," wrote Rachael Rensink, manager of Delta Social Media, in an updated post on the carrier's blog.

By Saturday night, power was restored to concourses A, C and D, and the problem was isolated to 16 gates in concourse B, according to Scovronski.

Most air travelers have encountered something gross on board planes at one time or another, like old food crumbs or stained seats. But now comes this: rodent droppings in the cabin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent a warning letter to Delta Air Lines last week after inspectors found "the presence of rodent excreta pellets and rodent urine stains" near the food preparation and storage areas of one of the carrier's planes. The inspection -- conducted from January 26 to February 2 in Atlanta -- revealed droppings "too numerous to count" in the ceiling panels of the plane's middle crossover galley, or directly over places where food and drinks are stored, according to the letter.

It's one thing to lose your luggage while flying. It's another when your dog goes missing. Josiah Allen says his dog, Paco, didn't make it home when he flew recently from Mexico to his home in Seaforth, Canada. Delta Air Lines says the dog escaped from a carrier on the tarmac. "I am hopeful that Delta will be able ... to locate and retrieve Paco and that he can come to my home and be loved and cared for," Allen said. A Delta spokeswoman, Susan Elliot, said Paco broke out of a dog carrier at the airport in Mexico City, Mexico, on May 3. "Our staff have conducted exhaustive searches to locate the dog," she said.
