Super Bowl XVIII, on January 22, 1984, was a snooze, as most Super Bowls were before the Tom Brady era. The Los Angeles Raiders were beating the Washington Redskins 21-3 at halftime, and my friends and I, watching the game in a dormitory lobby, were bored. About the only things we were paying attention to were the pizzas drooping over nearby tables and the comely delivery person who brought a new one every half-hour or so. And then, it came on TV. "It" was one of those events you're drawn to before you're even aware of it. We gradually noticed a droning voice under a grayed-out picture, an attractive runner in white tank top and red shorts wielding a sledgehammer, rows of bald automaton-like men, a giant TV screen featuring a ranting man. Is this a new movie of Orwell's "1984"?

"Grosse Pointe" is a satirical, behind-the-scenes look at a popular teen TV series. See if you recognize similarities to a recently departed show like that. "Grosse Point" features a dark-haired, Shannen Doherty-lookalike type. When we see her boyfriend, a fellow with sideburns and a motorcycle, Luke Perry comes to mind. And let us not forget the character with low self-esteem and an eating disorder: Does she make you think of Tori Spelling? If you say "Beverly Hills 90210" resembles this new show, step to the head of the class.

On this Labor Day, we bring you a story on just how hard Jennifer Lopez has been working -- working on her physical relationship with her boyfriend, that is. According to an FHM magazine article reported in the New York Post, singer-actress J.Lo and her new boyfriend, dancer Chris Judd, recently spent an entire week in bed. It apparently happened in Hawaii, and we're assuming they didn't just lie there. "Cris and I had a lot of time to do what we both like," Lopez reported.

You've heard them all before: The cop who doesn't play by the rules. The holy fool who challenges the beliefs of the country club set. The small-town girl with big-time dreams who invades Poland with a wisecracking robot. That last one doesn't sound familiar? If so, that's because you'll only find it in "The Official Movie Plot Generator," a book made up of 90 page tabs -- each containing a standard-issue protagonist, plot and twist -- that can be combined in thousands of combinations.
